Date: 16–17 September 2002
Venue: The Royal Veterinary College, Camden, Central London
Website: www.ILT2002.net

Elearning provides new opportunities to deliver learning in innovative ways to a vast audience both in the UK and internationally. This opens up the possibility of the provision of high quality resources to countries unable to afford conventional professional education. In the health sector, there are now a number of initiatives developing resources to support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as well as continuing professional development and public health education. This conference, organised by the Internet Learning Trust (ILT) in co-operation with the Royal Veterinary College, will explore how to exploit this new potential and will help to map out a pathway for future cooperation and development.

The conference will bring together some of the leading experts and practitioners in elearning and health in the United Kingdom. Networking and discussion during the conference will provide a valuable chance to share experience and establish new links and partnerships. Following the conference, delegates will be able to access a dedicated web environment managed by ILT to facilitate continuing collaboration.

Day 1 of the Conference will provide an overview of current developments in elearning including presentations from the UK eUniversities Worldwide, the Open University, the Department for Education and Skills, the EPIC Group, Redbus CPD and Imfundo.

Day 2 will focus on how these developments are impacting on the health professions including medicine, veterinary science and dentistry including presentations from the NHS University, the Wellcome Trust, the Scottish Virtual Medical School and a number of leading UK universities.

Amongst other issues, the conference will explore the following topics:

  • new partnerships between higher education, private providers and government agencies to develop and deliver elearning
  • the potential for collaboration between different centres including sharing expertise, resources and content
  • developing elearning resources in the UK which will be available to a global audience
  • the potential for UK learning resources to address the needs of the developing world
  • the real needs of learners and how best to respond to them through existing and new learning technologies
  • new elearning technologies and how they can be applied
  • the real economics of elearning
  • a vision for elearning in the future

Specific outcomes of the Conference will include:

  • documented experiences of good practice in elearning in the health sector
  • an international enetwork of health practitioners, academics and businesses
  • a database of potential partners for collaborative projects
  • priorities and themes for subsequent conferences

The Conference will be of value to all those concerned with elearning and health. This will include:

  • elearning developers in higher and further education
  • clinicians and other health professionals
  • development organisations and international aid agencies
  • healthcare administrators
  • policy makers in government and the health professions
  • training and personnel directors
  • representatives of professional organisations
  • software and IT companies

The ILT Conference will be followed by a conference on ehealth on the 18–20 September 2002 organised by the International e-Health Association. This event will provide a wider perspective on the opportunities for ehealth in the future including international videoconference links with medical schools around the world. Individuals registering for both conferences will be entitled to a 25% discount on conference fees.

A special registration rate for 'early bird' registrations is available up until 31 July 2002.

A limited number of student rooms are available on campus at reasonable rates. Places are limited to 170 delegates so please register early to avoid disappointment.
