The Telemedicine and E-health Information Service (TEIS)

Doctors and other health professionals in the UK using IT to deliver better health services have received a major boost with the launch of a new service about telemedicine and ehealth run by the University of Portsmouth.

The Telemedicine and E-health Information Service (TEIS, pronounced to rhyme with 'ice') is a database of activities, companies and other information about the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to deliver health care to patients at a distance.

Through it, clinicians and administrators who are thinking of setting up their own telemedicine or ehealth project can find out about other practitioners who may have already done similar things. Hopefully, the database will mean that fewer NHS resources are duplicated unnecessarily.

The database is accessible on the Internet at either www.teis.port.ac.uk or www.teis.nhs.uk

TEIS covers applications that use information and communication technology:

  • to deliver health and/or social care in new ways;
  • on a person to person basis; and
  • where those people are physically apart.

The database holds over 2000 entries and is fully searchable. It is updated regularly by a team who monitor the professional press and attend telemedicine events.

The service is provided by the Healthcare Computing Group at the University of Portsmouth and is sponsored by the NHS Information Authority.

Dr Jim Briggs, head of the Healthcare Computing Group and Director of TEIS, said: "We at the University are pleased to have been asked by the NHS to combine our expertise in both the web and health services research to provide this high-tech resource. We anticipate that the UK healthcare community will benefit enormously by it."
