Transferring research to practice in the information age - 11-13 November 1998

European Union Centre, Centre for Health Care Quality, University of Missouri, Columbia

There are only ten RU Centres in academic locations across USA, others, some collective,  include Harvard, Georgia, Illinois, NYU, Duke, Pittsburgh, University Southern California, Washington-Seattle, and Wisconsin. The Centre at Missouri was launched with the Ambassador for the Delegation of the European Commission in the USA in attendance on 11 November 1998

The inaugural conference marked the first initiative of the Centre and will also be written up for a publication. The meeting, involving speakers from seven countries, covered advances in the dissemination of research, how high performance computing has facilitated the process, and how practitioners have to re-gear for the Information Age. It also looked at the infrastructure – both in the US and the European Union, and how knowledge bases should be designed for those with demanding operational roles. The other perspective, that of the commercial partners was explored by a speaker from SAP America and Jean Roberts of First Consulting Group Europe

The concluding session looked at quality issues – how information can contribute to the available opportunities in both public and private sectors and how systems and patients can develop quality improvements

The final day was held in conjunction with the Health Services Management Alumni Association Executive Institute; an interesting mix of health informaticians and operational facilities managers.  That session created many opportunities for debate and networking
