Largest Healthcare Database in Europe Means Better Patient Care

The Prescription Pricing Authority (PPA) has chosen IBM's DB2 Universal Database to underpin a Web-based application for UK GPs that will lead to better patient care through rationalisation of prescription costs.

1.2 billion prescription records are stored on the database, making it the largest healthcare information repository in Europe. Two hundred General Practitioners in England will have access to the database as part of a year-long pilot programme implemented by the PPA in January 1998. The database will eventually be rolled out to all 27,000 GPs in the UK. The PPA will in the future replace their existing electronic service to Health Authorities with a similar Web-based service to simplify the support of these systems remotely.
